Linden Lab - False Advertising?
Posted 1/24/2009 11:41:06 AM by Admin - [Show All My Posts]

The "Refer A Friend" program is a great way for site owners to receive bonus payments in exchange for traffic. Each time somebody converts to a premium account, Linden Lab pays you up to L$2,000! For those interested in this program, make sure to log into your account to click on the "Refer A Friend" link. Yes, this program is indeed only 2 clicks away!

Although still officially announced by Linden Lab, this program has been broken for about 6 months. It seems that the program hasn't made any payouts for new accounts signed up after July 21. A Jira was opened up by Adz Childs several months ago and the problem was acknowledged to me by Robin Linden on December 22 of 2008. Several times I've requested to either fix the issue, announce the end of the refer-a-friend program, or acknowledge the problem. As I mentioned to Linden Lab, this is false advertising and you can't just act as if nothing is wrong!

Since Linden Lab clearly isn't willing to acknowledge the issue publicly, I decided it's time after 6 months to alert the public that this program is indeed broken so site owners can decide for themselves whether or not they want to continue supporting this program. BTW, this isn't the first time that the refer-a-friend program has been broken. A few years ago the refer-a-friend program was also broken for about 1/2 year.

2. I've been thinking about this recently again too, thanks for bringing attention to it. I've honestly not seen a referral program run so poorly - with no stats or any information at all given to the affiliates, when these issues have been ignored for over two years.

3. I agree Fianna - this is without any doubt the worst managed affiliate program I've ever seen. I'm not sure why it seems to be so hard for Linden Lab to show some reports online unless of course they're keeping track of all this through spreadsheets instead of a database ;)

4. Well, unknowingly I think I got even with them. When I first joined, oh so many years ago, I referred my friend Dug. I never got anything from linden till about two years ago. Every month for a whole year they sent me 1500 lindens for the the one referal. Unfortunately after a year it stopped but it was mighty nice income. Now if anyone of you rat on me...

5. Hehe - I guess a broken affiliate program isn't bad for everybody huh? Lucky you Jez!

6. I had something similar to Jezebel actually, though I didn't cream nearly as much as that! I got several payment of 1000L for some guy I never met!
It just goes to show what a broken program it always was - even when it was working.
Thank you for bringing this to our attention Yo.

7. The referral payments did work somewhat for a short while - after a few months, I continued to recieve payments, but instead of the proper avatar name in my inworld notification, it seemed to be reverting to the the name of my first avatar referral. I believe the payment was for a legitimate referral, but the query that sent the notification was incorrect. Then those stopped (easier to turn it off then to fix it I guess!) and I was still recieving payments but with no notification.. then the payments stopped all together... *sigh*

8. I am glad you are bring attention to this again. I referred a friend of mine and did not get anything for over 6 mos after they went premium. Linden Lab seems (again) to want us to promote SL, build their numbers (so they look good to board of directors): all for free. is chump change for them to payout with this program and yet it is always "breaking". makes you think...

9. I think Linden should pay the land owners anyway --- yes, pay after all this time!

10. I will tell it to Japanese.

11. I thought they closed the refer a friend program out over a year ago. It's weird that it's still advertised on their site.

12. No the refer-a-friend program is still active according to Linden Lab. They actually know it's broken but haven't had any time to fix it.

13. Lets hope that back-pay for us trusty affiliates is on the table when they finally do "find time" :/
