Kata Kita on LJ ("Lost and Tossed")
To make this avatar make more sense to me (and folks who run into me) I came up with a legend or myth, if you will, covering where Kata came from and why she is the cranky thing she is. I hope it works for you -- I know it does for me. Fair warning, though -- this isn't an explicit tale but it is a bit...grisly ;) .
INTRODUCTION:
Kata is a condemned soul, a near-immortal manifestation of avarice and lust.
After many centuries of torture and banishment she has been granted a chance at life again. As befits the cruelty of her masters, however, she finds that "life" is not in any world she has known, but the simulacrum known as SL.
No true touch, no true love, only time and a measure of freedom within this breathless, intangible expanse. The bargain she has made, however, ensures that whether she suffers or thrives, it will be here.
She has several primary forms, her favorite being the main profile pic you see here. As her imprisonment in-world drags on, she will develop others to keep her occupied and the other ambient critters on their toes.
Although she is full of mischief and has many bad habits, she bears little, genuine ill will towards humans and, least of all, towards their SL avatars. In fact, humans and their virtual toys have many practical uses for her...
PART 1:
The story of Kata's suffering begins almost a thousand years ago in Japan, near the time of the Hogen Rebellion and before the rise of the Samurai and the Shogunate. Kata (more an "it" than a "she") was at the time of a lesser tribe of Oni -- hideous, malevolent, ogre-like creatures.
On a bet with another, similar creature Kata was inspired to possess the body of a young woman and experiment with her form for no cause other than to know what mayhem could be had. It settled on a beautiful widow, Kameko, who had a handsome young son and infant daughter.
Kata tore through the door of their modest farmhouse late one night and, when the boy rose to drive it off, it slaughtered the child in front of Kameko and his sister, quickly and brutally. In mortal terror, Kameko cried pitifully and begged for mercy for her remaining child.
Kata chuckled and offered to spare the baby if Kameko would submit to its will, and she agreed. Kata then entered and occupied her body, annihilating Kameko from the inside, thus assuming her shape. After some adjustments to suit Kata's tastes, "she" killed and devoured the infant.
Once settled in, Kata resembled Kameko but was taller, immensely strong, darker-skinned with glowing, red eyes, and adorned with various skin mutilations. The payoff, however, was that Kata could also now look and sound exactly like Kameko for periods of days or even months.
PART 2:
In this guise, one day Kata happened upon (even by her standards) Taro, a perfect specimen of Bishonen, the handsome young heir to the prefecture. With nearly uncontrollable anticipation, she observed him with his attendants for several days, made note of his tendencies, and prepared.
When the time was right, Kata lured Taro away to a convenient spot, seduced him, and engaged him lustfully for several hours. When he was exhausted and helpless, she changed into her more menacing form and dragged him off to an isolated cave she had selected and stocked in advance.
Kata proceeded to torture, mutilate, and then devour Taro over a stretch of several weeks, until she could think of no more to do. With that out of the way, she moved on to other pursuits.
The local Lord, Kane -- a powerful ally of the Heian -- found his son's remains after a prolonged an agonizing search. He was immediately overcome with grief at the horrifying scene, but shortly set about to understand what happened and seek revenge.
The place of Taro's discovery was carefully documented and his remains preserved by the finest artisans in the prefecture, then quietly executed to ensure silence. For months following this, Lord Kane scoured the land in search of any other sign or knowledge of his son's murderer, ultimately killing many innocents in the process.
PART 3:
Finally, after much indirection, Lord Kane came upon an Onmyoji named Kisho in an isolated, mountain hut. Upon examination of the evidence, Kisho pointed out the various hallmarks of Kata's race and tribe, and helped Lord Kane formulate a plan for revenge on condition that his own life be spared.
Following some days of preparation, several chiefs of Oni tribes (rivals to Kata's) were summoned at the end of an extensive, bloody ritual. With Kisho on the verge of death from the strain of containing the immense, terrifying creatures, Lord Kane explained the situation and pleaded for their assistance, offering anything he had in exchange.
The chieftains, who would have engaged Kata for sport if it had occurred to them, agreed to take her and punish her for a thousand lifetimes, on condition that Lord Kane participate in an elaborate plot to capture her which would result in his death (and much amusement for the Oni).
His mind wasted with grief and vengeance, Lord Kane agreed and the plan proceeded. In the guise of elder Onmyoji, the Oni summoned Kata and made the appearance of containing her to a battlefield while Lord Kane's soldiers encircled her. Kata laughed gleefully while slaughtering them in scores.
As the rout came to close, Kata towered over Lord Kane and considered repeating the exercise she undertook with his son then, tiring of the thought, tore his beating heart from his chest. As good as their word, the Oni chieftains revealed themselves, stunned, and bound Kata. Kata did not bother to beg or barter, now fully understanding the trap.
PART 4:
Being of a near-immortal race, Kata and her ilk could not die without dire and costly magic, so the Oni didn't have to do much to fulfill their bargain and sustain her life. Kata was tortured and enslaved, made into the miserable plaything of their damned minions and their various slaves.
For dozens of lifetimes, Kata persisted in this state, made to appear either as she had been the day of her capture or as the long-dead Kameko, per her masters' whims. In neither state could she control her actions, words, or -- in many cases -- thoughts and desires. Truly, endlessly helpless.
The creativity of Oni violence and brutality is legendary, but at last the chieftains ran out of punishments for Kata. Looking down on the Earth, however (now much changed), they learned of the thinking machines and the worlds that humanity had created within, no doubt to enable their own fantasies of immortality and omnipotence.
After some observation and assessment, the Oni chieftains concocted a plan to further their sport with Kata. Summoning her to them, they released her will briefly to offer the opportunity to return her to the "world" of people, on condition she never leave. Certain of a trap but without credible alternatives, she agreed.
Thus was Kata returned to the world of people -- but not exactly -- manifesting in SL. Once familiar with her setting, she soon discovered, to her dismay, that her masters would often still force her to change shape and do their twisted bidding in this new prison from afar, without so much as the comforting familiarity of their scorn.
And so, now Kata's story continues.
