About My First Life

I am a singer/songwriter that plays my guitar out of necessity to reach people with my music. Songwriting has been my number one, most sacred form of personal expression and way of sorting out feelings since I could first sing a tune. My mother (RIP) taught me to sing my first harmony to "Silent Night." She also recorded the lyrics of my first known original song at age 2 and it went like this: "I love my dolly and I love my daddy toooo!"

I'm still singing about love. And the vulnerability, pain and loss that often accompanies it. I also sing about social injustice when I can get away with it. :D

In first life, my name is really Karen Enberg and I was born and raised in northern New Jersey, USA> I'm partially disabled with FMS, RLS, and IBS but nothing can slow me down in SL!!! I earn my only income performing my music in SL, so please come on by and check out one of my shows! My calling in life is to make a difference in improving harmony and understanding between all races, especially white and black in America, but globally as well and to fight poverty and classism. I believe this is why I have been given the gifts in music and art that I have been given and for me, fame and fortune are only useful so far as they can be used as tools to further my calling. Hopefully I will have more time for actual creativity and also recording after I get my staff settled and working well together.

Well THAT part happened! AutumnFoxx Sutherland has worked out great as my personal assistant. She's had a bitch of a time lately with being sick and then her kitty being sick but I think both are doing much better now and we are poised to rock and roll! ALSO I finally wrote some new music! In the last two weeks I have written SIX count em SIX new songs! This is so exciting for me! And Nerve wrecking too, because few things make a songwriter feel more exposed and vulnerable than playing a new song for the first time. Scarrrrrrrryyyyyyyy! It's been like...I have to go through stage fright all over again! But it is well worth it to be playing new stuff! And four out of the six are inspired by SL. They aren't directly stories about me, but kind of a combination of my thoughts, experiences and all of my observations in the last 8 months since I first rezzed. If SL is about anything, its about relationships, you know?

ANNOUNCEMENTS and NEWS:

Booking news! Now I am available to do private, very romantic shows in my FSB Aquarium, a very romantic underwater (but not in water) setting. The fee is 10K/no tips and may be split between up to three couples.

More booking news! From now on Celestria Henly will be my booking agent. Autumnfoxx Sutherland is still my assistant and show host and will still be the one to contact with details once the booking is made, but the initial booking will be made by Celestria. :D Yay!

Freestar Bay (FSB) Musician's Showcase News! Well changes happen and in SL they happen faster than you can even think about it. Our dear friend Valerye Wycliffe has stepped down as our main showcase host as of March 29, 2008. We still love you Val and hope you continue to come hang with us and sing at the Midnight Mic on Saturday nights! You'll always be part of the family! Stepping up to take the post is our new team member, Showcase regular, Sundra Petrov! Welcome to the FSB Family, Sundra! Yay! Of course, AutumnFoxx Sutherland remains the very capable Showcase Manager!

TDLME News! Well there is no more Tammas Dyrssen Live Music Events. However, I will continue to do live music event planning and expect to have exciting news surrounding that soon. Delinda and I remain friends and I wish her the very best luck in the future, whatever she pursues. :D

Results! The 2 week fundraiser for AngelHeros, a global outreach organization that helps children that are facing serious illness and other tragic circumstances, ended on a very exciting high note when we "Maxed it to the Million" during the final hour, Maximillion Kleene's set. The final total after auction proceeds were collected was over 1, 090,000 Lindens! The original simraising goal was met and nearly doubled! Way to go team!!!!!! Thanks to 48 volunteers and 61 musicians and ALL OF YOU! Great job!

Gallary News! Well...due to what for me, were very disappointing changes in the physical gallary space at Coconut Palms, (not Lone Star Mall) and the fact the management saw fit to ban and orbit me when I expressed my disappointment, Free Spirit Visions Art Gallery is looking for a new home. *laughing* And to think I almost made it a full year in SL without getting orbited! I'll keep you posted when I know where I land! In the meantime, you can still purchase my art at Mustang2 Bing's Lone Star Mall at the link in the CURRENT PROJECTS section of this newsletter.

Opportunity! We are now offering venue and sim owners, booking agents, and managers the opportunity to receive advance notice of the muscial talent line-up at the weekly Musician's Showcase, and the times they are playing. This is a notecard mailing list, so no group must be joined to recieve it. Check out the musicians you have heard about but never had the time to see, as well as brand new musicians presented in a format that showcases 10 musicians over a five hour period. Event Description: A quality musical variety show - 10 musicians in 5 hours
Day and Time: Every Saturday - 7 pm SLT to Midnight (Pre-show Intro starts at 6:45 pm SLT). Mic Opens at Midnight!
Setting: Freestar Bay Virtual Universe, a Virtual Reallity Room with changing scenery (musician's choice)

On 9/1/07, history was made at Freestar Bay Virtual Universe when I hosted my first Musician's Showcase. This is a weekly event, and thanks to the wonderful contributions of the fine musicians that have played there, the energetic and dedicated efforts of the Showcase staff, AutumnFoxx Sutherland (Showcase Manager) and Valerye Wycliffe (Showcase Host), and the supportive and enthusiastic spirit of our regular guests, it has been a tremendous success from the very first one, with the sim being packed (capped at 50 to avoid sim crashes) for most of the five hours. My goal for every showcase is to present a wide variety of genres, giving folks (guests and venue owners) a chance to hear music they have not heard before and musicians a chance to make new fans and make booking contacts! The ongoing goal of the showcase is to present both quality and variety, so that any given night you will enjoy blues, rock, jazz, classical, soul, hip hop, latin music, etc, and any combination of the above. Once a month we typically have a specially themed showcase to add to the fun!

If you would like to perform at the showcase then please contact AutumnFoxx Sutherland or myself to be scheduled. We usually are booked a minimum of three weeks in advance, and the earlier times slots are the first to be filled. Because we purposefully build the shows for continuity, variety, and quality, you may be asked to audition. Following the Showcase the mic opens up for aspiring, inexperienced, or experienced late night and European musicians to take advantage of the existing crowd, and has been known to go on for an additional 5 hours. Because no one likes "dead air," if you have never performed in SL, you may be asked to do a sound check prior to playing the open mic, so we know you are able to stream sucessfully with reasonable sound quality/balance.

---WMN in SL (Women Musicians Network in Second Life)---


This group exists to encourage and support more women musicians (including those that sing to backing tracks) to step forward and stake their claim in the spotlight! Practical help in learning to stream, SL music career strategies, consultations with mentors, opportunities at Freestar Bay to put on shows, networking and a comfortable gathering place for us are all part of what this group has to offer. On a large scale, we hope to gain media attention for all of SL live music, contribute to it's quality and availability, and ultimately to raise awareness and funds for women's issues such as breast cancer and Fibromyalgia, as well as other projects that help women. If you are interested in either helping to organize events, public relations, to support or mentor musicians, or are a woman musician yourself, please contact me in IM or join the group directly. We have a dedicated woman only club house as well, that is a cozy gathering place, and will be the location of our organizational meetings :D

Currently I have no gallery of my own to display my own RL paintings and drawings for sale other than the spot at Lone Star Mall, tho I am working on this. My works are done in acrylic, oils, charcoal powder, pen and ink, and colored pencil, and range from representational pieces freaturing people and animals to colorful intricately patterned geometric acrylics.
